Music at Holy Spirit

The music ministries of Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church seek to glorify God
through music in our worship services and in our community.  As scripture declares,
we believe that music in the context of worship is to be thoughtful, excellent, and always
God-centered and God-honoring.  We believe that all music activities in our church
should have the ultimate purpose of bringing Glory to God as we sing the glory in praise, prayer, and proclamation.

Holy Spirit ELC houses several fine instruments which include a three-manual Noehren/Buzard pipe organ,
an 1868 Concert Grand Steinway and a five octave set of Malmark handbells and chimes.

Chancel Choir is an adult choir, singing a variety of music, including Great European Classics, American Classics, Gospel, Hymn-Anthems, Folk and occasionally Contemporary Christian. We meet every Wednesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. No audition or previous experience is required. Chancel Choir sings during the 11:00 am Sunday service leading the congregational singing of hymns and liturgy September through May. Church membership is not required, but is encouraged.

We always welcome new voices to join in the choir! Please prayerfully consider how you could participate in this vital ministry in our church.

English Handbell Choir is an adult bell choir with a limited enrollment of 15 members. Rehearsals are from 6:00 to 7:00 pm every Wednesday evening and faithful regular attendance is encouraged. Handbells play once a month on Sunday mornings at the 11:00 am service as well as high holy days such as Reformation, Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. General musical knowledge or experience with any musical instrument is helpful, but not required.

Bel Canto Children's Choir

If you have children or grandchildren who are elementary school age or younger, we welcome you to bring them on Sunday mornings following the 11:00am service for rehearsal with Mr. Justin and we will get them involved in singing and making music!  Bel Canto choir sings periodically from September through June and we always welcome new voices to join!

The children’s choir members will also have an opportunity to participate in a
Children’s Hand-Chime Choir. They will begin with kid’s bells and “graduate” into the hand chimes that the adults use. This should be a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn more about music fundamentals and playing with instruments in addition to singing.

Feel free to contact Mr. Justin if you have any further questions!

Summer Choir is an informal gathering of people who love to praise God in song. Summer choir sings while the Chancel Choir is on “summer break” from regular rehearsals. They meet for thirty minutes before the worship service during which they will sing and learn a simple anthem, so it’s a great opportunity to participate in the music ministry without the commitment of weekly rehearsals. Summer choir is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Just show up and sing!

Cantor/Assisting Ministers lead the musical Liturgy of the Word and undergo 1-2 months of partner training before entering the cantor rotation. You may become a cantor without being a member of any of the choirs at Holy Spirit, although many of our cantors also participate in one or more choral groups.  All materials and training are provided. Interested parties should schedule a meeting with our Director of Music.
